The Easiest DIY Anti-Static Spray

This DIY anti-static spray is one of the best natural ways to help reduce static in your clothing! While using simple household ingredients, you can store this in your vehicle, in your purse for a quick fix on your static clothes, or keep in your home to prevent static cling with clothing and bedding!

What causes static in clothing?

An imbalance in the positive and negative charges in our clothing fabrics causes static electricity in clothing. This is caused by different fabrics rubbing together, especially in the dryer. Static is more common with synthetic fabrics than natural fibers. This is because synthetic fabrics are more likely to gain electrons (a negative charge) while natural fibers, like cotton, are more likely to lose them.

The main culprits of static cling are low humidity and tumble drying (aka, using a dryer). When you are in a dry heat area, your clothes are more likely to stick to you or have a buildup of static electricity, causing those static shocks we all know and love.

How to reduce static

There are ways to reduce static while drying your clothes and while you are out and about. These DIY alternatives are amazing natural methods to reduce static without having to resort to chemicals! Most of this stuff is also already in your home!

When doing laundry:

  • 1) You can use fabric softener in the rinse cycle of the wash. Fabric softener has great anti-static properties and helps soften the fibers of your fabric which helps reduce static
  • 2) To help reduce static electricity, Use dryer sheets or wool dryer balls. You can use commercial dryer sheets or make your own homemade dryer sheets.
  • 3) Dry your clothing in a lower dryer setting, and do not overdry it. When you overdry your clothes, you create dry air in your dryer, and lack of humidity causes an increase in static buildup.
  • 4) If you are able, dry your clothing on a clothes line! They are not in a tumble dryer and this will greatly help reduce static, especially if you live in a more humid environment. You can make your own outdoor clothesline or put one up in your home!
  • 5) You can use soap nuts in your laundry! Soap nuts are a great natural laundry detergent that have static-reducing properties!

When you are wearing your clothes:

There are multiple way to help reduce static when your clothes start clinging to you:

  • 1) Rub your clothing down with a metal hanger before putting your clothing on. The wire hanger will absorb any loose electrons and reduce static
  • 2) Rub your clothing down with a damp washcloth. This will increase the humidity in your clothing and reduce static.
  • 3) Increase humidity in your home. You can do this by boiling a pot of water on the stove or having a humidifier if your home air is dry. This will help reduce static in your home.
  • 4) Rub your clothing with aluminum foil. You can use aluminum foil in your dryer to help reduce static or you can rub your clothing down with a piece of aluminum foil to get rid of electrostatic charge and reduce static electricity!

What is in this DIY anti-static spray?

This anti-static spray is INCREDIBLY easy to make because it only requires two ingredients!!!

Fabric Softener:

I use my homemade fabric softener in this recipe which consists of white vinegar, vegetable glycerin, distilled water, and essential oils. Don’t worry, you won’t have a vinegar smell with this fabric softener! You can use conventional fabric softener if that is what you use in your home, but I like to use more natural products in my home!

Distilled water:

This will help increase humidity in your clothing and dilute your softener mixture so you don’t have buildup on your clothes. You don’t want to use plain water because the added chemicals and such in your water can cause this mixture to expire quicker or turn your essential oils rancid. Using distilled is best!
