Being a new parent is hard because you not only have a brand new baby and a brand new life to live, but you also have so much information thrown at you and so many questions people ask. When I had my firstborn child I didn’t pay close attention to the products I was using until much later in his life. When you research and read about harmful ingredients, it can get overwhelming to do the research and figure out if a product is right for you or not.
With chronic diseases on the rise, especially in kids, we need to take a hard look at what has changed over the years to do this. Along with environmental causes, there are also many more chemicals and toxins in our lives. Our bodies take on so much and without proper support, it is hard for our bodies to detox all the thousands of chemicals we encounter each day. That’s why it is important, now more than ever, to try and take control over what we put on our bodies and what we have in our homes, especially for our little ones!
What Ingredients in Conventional Diaper Creams Are Harmful and Why?:
Modern-day baby products are filled with many chemicals that are not safe for our children. Research keeps showing that ingredients like petrolatum, lanolin, fragrance, and talc are dangerous for our bodies. This is especially dangerous for babies because their surface area to body-weight ratio is higher than those of adults or even older children. Their tiny bodies are taking on lots of harmful chemicals due to the increasing amount of them being used in everyday conventional products along with baby care personal products. The good news is there are plenty of natural options for us to use! By reducing the amount of chemical products you are putting on your baby’s body, you are making more and more conscious health decisions for your children!
Petrolatum or Petroleum Jelly:
Petrolatum is the byproduct of petroleum. This ingredient is harmful because it can contain carcinogens and endocrine disruptors.
” When properly refined, petrolatum has no known health concerns. However, with an incomplete refining history, petrolatum could potentially be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAHs. PAHs are byproducts of organic material combustion, commonly stored in fats upon exposure due to their lipophilic properties.[3] There is no way to confirm proper refinement unless a complete refining history is provided.”
Most companies do not have a complete refining history nor do they conduct most of these studies. It is best to avoid products with petrolatum to be on the safe side!
Lanolin:
Lanolin has been controversial. It is derived from oils that come from sheep’s wool. While the ingredient itself could be relatively safe, sheep’s wool is directly sprayed with glyphosate and pesticides which get into the lanolin and go right onto our skin.
Fragrance:
Artificial fragrance not only causes skin irritation on a baby’s skin, but it is also a major endocrine disruptor. Fragrance is a term for over 3,000 different chemicals that companies do not have to disclose. Aside from us not knowing what we are even putting on our skin, fragrance can cause reproductive disorders, skin issues, and lung issues as well. Although Artificial Fragrance is USUALLY not in baby products because of the baby’s sensitive skin, sometimes they sneak into certain products.
Talc:
Talc is a known human carcinogen that is in many baby products that we use. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), talc can be contaminated with asbestos fibers which pose a high risk for cancer and, in some cases, respiratory disorders if it is in aerosol products.
Symptoms of Diaper Rash:
- Redness to the diaper area
- Itchy, tender skin
- Red Bumps, open sores, or blisters on the skin
Causes of Diaper Rash:
- Excess moisture
- Chafing from the diaper
- Prolonged exposure to urine or feces
- Allergies or Skin sensitivity
- Bacterial or Yeast Infection
- Medication side effects
- Diarrhea
Other Ways to Prevent Diaper Rash:
Sometimes, keeping your baby’s bottom dry and clear of fecal matter doesn’t help with getting rid of diaper rash. With many different causes, it is hard to pinpoint what is causing it, and it may take a little experimentation to figure it out.
If you are cloth diapering, you may have to switch to disposable diapers for the time being until the rash goes away. Cloth diapers are not as absorbent as disposables and you are more likely to have the baby’s bottom break out.
There are many ways to prevent diaper rash if you can determine what is causing the diaper rash. Suppose your baby suddenly develops a diaper rash after starting antibiotics or having diarrhea. In that case, you will be able to accommodate that condition and potentially have to consult your doctor for a new medication.
If you have been diligent in making sure your baby stays clean and dry, you may have to explore food sensitivities or sensitivities to the diapers or wipes you are using on your baby.
When to Seek Medical Help:
It seems silly to seek medical help for something as simple as a diaper rash, but sometimes it can lead to more things besides a simple diaper rash. You should bring your baby to the doctor if:
- They develop a rash with a fever
- A rash that becomes severe or looks different than a typical diaper rash
- A rash that oozes becomes itchy, or burns
Understanding Non-Toxic Baby Diaper Rash Creams:
What makes a diaper rash cream non-toxic?:
A non-toxic, all-natural diaper cream has natural ingredients in it. It is free of petroleum products, synthetic fragrances, and other chemicals. They also will usually have certified organic ingredients, however, if you buy one that doesn’t, just make sure it has natural ingredients in it.
You also want to make sure the company uses pure essential oils and not essential oils that are synthetically made.
What Ingredients Should I Look for?:
Non-nano Zinc Oxide:
Non-nano zinc oxide is usually the active ingredient in most diaper rash creams. Some non-toxic diaper rash ointments do not contain this ingredient because it can potentially ruin cloth diapers. Non-nano zinc oxide provides a moisture barrier and acts as a skin protectant from urine and fecal matter.
It is important to make sure the zinc oxide is non-nano because it doesn’t cross the skin barrier like nano-sized zinc oxide.
Natural Oils:
You will usually find natural oils like mineral oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, or even seed oil like grapeseed oil. Using grapeseed oil or sunflower oil for topical use is not bad for us like ingesting the oil or cooking with it. Make sure the oils are organic.
Make sure your product is made with natural vitamin E oils and not processed ones. These aren’t as good for us as natural Vitamin E.
Scented only with essential oils:
Essential oils not only provide scent, but they also have healing properties as well. If your products are scented, make sure it is with natural and pure essential oils and do not contain things like “natural Fragrance” unless the company is very transparent on what their natural fragrance is and where it comes from.

Non-Toxic Diaper Rash Creams and Cloth Diapers:
Most natural diaper rash creams are not deemed safe for cloth diapers because they could potentially ruin the diaper. Most companies will advise using an insert or a liner when using diaper cream. I know people who have used cloth diapers and natural diaper creams and they have not ruined their diapers. Some manufacturers will tell you if the cloth diaper can handle diaper cream or not.
If you want to be safe, invest in diaper liners to protect your diaper.
How to use Non-Toxic Diaper Rash Cream:
You would use a non-toxic diaper rash cream like you would any other diaper cream you have used before.
For best results:
- After wiping cleanse the area with warm water
- Apply diaper cream to the affected area after every diaper change
- A little goes a long way. No need to cake it on. Just put enough on the skin to coat it.
- Change diapers more frequently to reduce exposure to moisture and fecal matter
- If using cloth diapers, consider switching to a disposable to absorb more moisture for the time being, especially if they have severe diaper rash.
- Use a talc-free baby powder or just use plain cornstarch or arrowroot powder. Cornstarch always seemed to get rid of my baby’s diaper rashes.
