Why homemade wood furniture polish?
Wood furniture polish is incredibly easy to make and is safe for all wooden surfaces in your home. It is free of synthetic fragrances and uses simple ingredients.
This homemade wood furniture polish doesn’t emit any aerosol fumes, making it safe for the environment and for your home. It’s also free of harsh chemicals but doesn’t sacrifice cleaning your wood and making it shine like new!
This homemade wood furniture polish also works as an excellent dusting spray on your wood and helps protect your wood against dust!
What is in this homemade wood furniture polish
Olive Oil:
Olive oil is a natural oil that is free of harsh chemicals and high in fatty acid, oleic acid in particular. These fatty acids are a natural moisturizer and lubricant. Olive oil is also high in antioxidants which helps to protect the woods against things like water and dust.
You can use cheap olive oil in this recipe, however, I would pay attention to the brand you are using. If it has chemicals in it or wasn’t processed correctly, you could be harming your wood. I buy organic, cold-pressed olive oil.
You can use jojoba oil, coconut oil, or grapeseed as well. These oils are inexpensive and have a longer shelf-life than olive oil. If I make a small batch of wood polish, I prefer olive oil because of its properties to protect wood.
Vegetable Glycerin:
Vegetable glycerin helps clean wood and also provides natural moisture and lubricant.
Hydrogen Peroxide:
Hydrogen peroxide is a gentle cleaner for wood. It will effectively clean your wood without damaging it. I like using this instead of white vinegar because it doesn’t have the vinegar odor and cleans effectively.
Essential Oils:
I like to use a combination of orange essential oil and lemon essential oil in my homemade wood furniture polish. Orange oil helps protect and polish wood. It works to make the wood shine and look like new!
Lemon oil works as a mild disinfectant and natural cleaner.

Is this DIY furniture polish safe for all woods?
This natural wood polish spray is safe for all types of wood. It does not have any chemicals in it that will affect the wood or strip it of its stain.
This homemade wood furniture polish can be used on wood with or without a finish. This natural furniture polish recipe is safe for wooden cutting boards, butcher block countertops, and even kitchen cabinets!
How to maintain and clean your wooden furniture:
To clean your wooden furniture, take a microfiber cloth and spray some dusting spray on your homemade wood polish spray on it to dampen it. Wipe away the dust on the wood with your damp cloth, going with the grain.
You should dust at least once per week to make sure the abrasive dust doesn’t start scratching your wood.
Take a dry cloth and spray your wooden furniture down with your homemade wood polish. You may want to try it on an inconspicuous area before spraying the whole furniture down, just in case.
Using your dry cloth, wipe down your surface going in the direction of the grain. You don’t want to spray too much or you will leave an oily residue. You will be left with a beautiful shine and a great smell!
Materials Needed to make your own furniture polish:
- Amber glass spray bottle
How to Make Homemade Wood Furniture Polish
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or grapeseed oil
- 2 Tablespoons Vegetable Glycerin
- 1/4 cup Hydrogen Peroxide
- 20 drops of lemon essential oil
Combine all ingredients together and place them inside your amber glass spray bottle.
That’s it! Super simple, free of toxic chemicals.
You can also make a DIY wood polish recipe using vinegar. Replace the hydrogen peroxide with vinegar and the rest of the ingredients stay the same!
Tips for making and using homemade wood furniture polish:
Use essential oils instead of lemon juice. Lemon juice can go bad faster and also has additives in it most of the time. If you buy a good quality essential oil, you will not have to worry about this.
You can replace olive oil with another oil like coconut oil. I would use fractionated coconut oil because regular coconut oil can harden at room temp.
If you want to make a large batch of this recipe, use an oil like jojoba oil or grapeseed oil. Olive oil goes rancid faster than these oils.
