Why Powdered toilet bowl cleaner?

Powdered toilet bowl cleaner, in my personal opinion, is easier to put together and requires very few ingredients. I have a liquid homemade toilet bowl cleaner recipe, but in powder form, I can easily measure out my ingredients and put them in my toilet as opposed to having to mix things and store it!

What is in the homemade powder toilet bowl cleaner?

All these ingredients you can find easily at the grocery store or order online!

Baking Soda

Baking soda works to break down mineral deposits and lift stains. It also acts as a natural deodorizer.

Citric Acid

Citric Acid is a powerful cleaning tool as it is acidic, so it is used to clean hard water stains. It also has antibacterial properties, and combats mildew and mold, which helps with odor. Citric acid is a great alternative to using white vinegar or lemon juice

Citric acid is a key ingredient in this DIY toilet cleaning powder because you will use way less elbow grease to scrub your toilet. It makes this homemade toilet cleaner powder work just as well as the store-bought cleaners.

Sea Salt or Kosher Salt

Salt is useful in making water softer, making it easier for stains to come off the inside of the bowl. It is also good for your pipes, as it can act as a natural unclogging agent, however, there isn’t enough in this recipe to do that.

Table salt is not recommended because it is way more processed and has a different chemical makeup so it won’t clean as well

Essential Oils

Essential oils have lots of anti-bacterial properties and certain ones aid in cleaning. Using pure essential oils is the best way to enhance the benefits because they are natural oils without artificial fragrance or added chemicals

See my post here on the best essential oil brands!

Some great choices for essential oils are lemon oil, orange oil, lavender oil, peppermint oil, tea tree oil, or lemongrass. I like to make an essential oil blend of lemon, peppermint, lavender, and lemongrass. These all have great cleaning properties and smell great!

How to Make your DIY toilet cleaner:

Gather:

  • 2 cups of citric acid
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons of sea salt or kosher salt
  • 30 drops of essential oils.

Mix together and store in an airtight container or glass jar for up to one month.

How To Use Your Homemade Powder Toilet Bowl Cleaner

When using your own toilet bowl cleaner, you will want to take about 1/4 cup of your cleaner and sprinkle it around in your toilet bowl. You will have fizzing in there from the citric acid. Let your powder dissolve, take your toilet brush and scrub away any extra stains that are left inside the toilet bowl.

Other options to keep a clean toilet

Use white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide to get off adamant stains

Sometimes, if I’ve neglected cleaning for a while, I utilize vinegar or hydrogen peroxide to aid in removing stains from inside the toilet bowl.

When vinegar and baking soda react, the fizzing action releases carbon dioxide gas that can loosen dust and grime particles. However, if you let the vinegar and baking soda sit together for long periods, they end up canceling each other out.

When using this method, it is best to scrub right away to utilize the chemical reaction between the two.

Remove old mineral stains with a scouring pad

I recently learned that using a pumice stone to clean your bathroom toilet does more harm than good. When using a pumice stone, you are scratching away at the inside of your toilet, putting groves into the surface. When this happens, it makes it easier for dirt and grime particles to stick to your toilet. Therefore, I opt for something more gentle like a scouring pad!

Clean the inside of your toilet tank

By keeping the inside of your toilet tank clean, you are making sure the water going into your toilet is cleaner as well. I like to take some of this natural homemade toilet bowl cleaner and put it inside my tank as well to clean it!

Final Thoughts:

You don’t have to rely on store-bought toilet cleaners to clean your toilet. There are effective ways to use natural products and still get the same clean results at home! This is a safer alternative to keep in your home and around pets and children. Not to mention, this is safer for our environment as well.
