There comes a time in every baby’s life when they break out in diaper rash. Your baby’s rash could be very uncomfortable to them or not affect them at all. However, you want to take care of that rash as quickly as possible so it does not get worse!
Homemade Diaper Rash Cream without zinc oxide is perfect for your baby. It is packed with many healing ingredients and free of toxic ingredients that you find in conventional diaper creams.
I started making my own natural products because it saved us quite a bit of money to do so. In my personal opinion, it is much more convenient to make them myself because if I run out I can easily whip up a new batch!
What is Diaper Rash?
Diaper rashes, or diaper dermatitis, are red rashes that are typically in areas that are in the diaper area on your baby including the groin, inner thighs, and buttocks. They will usually occur in the groin area, buttocks, or inner thighs.
Most diaper rash looks like red, inflamed skin, but also can have patches of raised skin or spots. Your baby’s delicate skin is very susceptible to diaper rash, especially if they are popping a lot or if they are teething. Prevention and treatment are key with diaper rash.
What are The Commom Causes of Diaper Rash
- Frequent contact with urine and fecal matter
- Chafing From the diaper
- Allergies
- Yeast Infection or bacterial infection
- Diarrhea
- Medication Side Effects
- Skin sensitivities
Why use homemade diaper rash cream?
No artificial fragrance:
Artificial fragrance not only causes skin irritation on your baby’s sensitive skin, but it is also a major endocrine disruptor. Fragrance is a term for over 3,000 different chemicals that companies do not have to disclose.
Aside from us not knowing what we are even putting on our skin, synthetic fragrances can cause reproductive disorders, skin issues, and lung issues as well. This homemade natural diaper cream is scented with essential oils that have antibacterial properties.
Full of healing ingredients:
Conventional diaper rash creams have ingredients like petroleum jelly in them that do our bodies more harm than good. This homemade diaper cream is full of ingredients that heal the body. See below what the function of each ingredient is and how it helps your baby’s diaper rash!

Whipped shea butter is used for soothing and conditioning your skin. It is also full of vitamins and antioxidants that can help repair the skin.
Organic Coconut Oil:
Coconut oil also has many antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The use of coconut oil in this recipe is to promote wound healing and reduce inflammation. Coconut oil has also been shown to help with the production of collagen, which is essential for skin healing.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil:
Organic extra virgin olive oil has anti-inflammatory properties that help with wound healing and reducing inflammation.
Bentonite Clay:
Bentonite clay aids in detoxing. Its use is to remove impurities and other toxins from your skin. Bentonite clay is also full of anti-fungal properties that can help heal the skin. Bentonite clay also provides a moisture barrier to your skin to help protect against moisture.
Beeswax Pellets:
Beeswax aids in healing and providing a moisture barrier to the skin.
Calendula Oil:
Calendula oil is the oil extracted from marigold flowers. This oil is full of anti-inflammatory properties that aid well in skin healing. You can find calendula in many skincare products because it greatly reduces certain skin conditions.
Cod Liver Oil:
Cod Liver Oil is full of vitamins D and A. This would replace your typical store-bought “A&D” ointment that you normally see. The vitamins are naturally occurring and are free of synthetic materials. Be sure you get a good brand.
Tea Tree or Roman Chamomile Essential Oil:
Tea Tree essential oils are full of many antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. Roman Chamomile is great for soothing and healing skin.
You want to make sure you are using safe essential oils brands because if you use ones that are not trusted and tested, you can be doing more harm to your baby.

You could also use Lavender essential oil. It is important essential oils are diluted in a carrier oil when used. This cream has plenty of oil in it to make sure it is safe for your baby!

What is the difference between this recipe and others with zinc oxide?
Usually, in natural diaper rash creams, non-nano zinc oxide is the active ingredient in the cream. However, due to the moisture barrier properties of non-nano zinc oxide, it can damage cloth diapers. Zinc oxide can also damage and stain clothing.
Typically if your baby’s diaper rash is being caused by moisture issues, using a non-nano zinc oxide-based cream works better for your baby. However, if you’re an avid cloth diaper user or you want a preventative balm, this recipe works perfectly!
What Are The Benefits of this homemade diaper rash cream without zinc oxide:
The BEST part of this homemade diaper rash cream without zinc oxide is that it DOUBLES as a salve for other skin issues. Whether or not you have a cut, a rash, or even other skin issues, this balm can help with all of those problems!
This cream is free of artificial fragrance, artificial dyes, and synthetic products. It has organic ingredients, ensuring the quality of the product.

Materials Needed to make your homemade diaper rash cream:
- Mixer
- Mixing Bowls
- Heavy-bottomed pot, preferably stainless steel
- A glass bowl for double boiler
- Amber glass jar for storage
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup Whipped Shea Butter, cocoa butter, or mango butter ( These are all interchangeable at a 1:1 Ratio)
- 1/4 cup Organic Coconut Oil
- 2 Tablespoons Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 2 tablespoons Bentonite Clay
- 1 teaspoon Beeswax Pellets (Optional, see below.)
- 1 tablespoon Calendula Oil (Optional, but highly recommended)
- 1 tablespoon Cod Liver Oil (Optional, see replacements below)
- 20 drops of Essential Oils such as tea tree oil or Roman chamomile
Substitutions:
Calendula oil isn’t 100% necessary for this balm but I would definitely recommend it. I am 100% for using products you normally keep in your home and if this isn’t a typical one you keep around, feel free to omit it.
For Cod Liver oil you can also use castor oil, vitamin E oil (not tocopherol), jojoba oil, or a pure and organic mineral oil. This also isn’t 100% necessary but the vitamins and minerals that come from these oils aid in healing. Good cod liver oil can be somewhat expensive, so feel free to use substitutions.
Beeswax pellets provide a protective barrier to your skin as well as help heal your skin. I would highly recommend using this as it adds more substance to your diaper rash cream and makes it less greasy. Honey has the same healing properties but it can potentially cause this to spoil since there are no pres
How to Make your homemade diaper rash cream without zinc oxide:
- In a double boiler, melt coconut oil and beeswax pellets together. If you are using shea butter that is not already whipped, melt this as well. You can also place your mixture in a heavy-bottomed pot and melt on very low heat, making sure you don’t burn the mixture.
- Take off the burner and let it cool.
- Add the rest of your ingredients to your oil mixture. Using a hand mixer, or in a stand mixer, whip until all ingredients are thoroughly combined and your mixture is light and fluffy.
- Place your diaper balm into a glass amber jar. Let set before using
- Store in a cool, dry place. Try to refrain from keeping the balm in warm places or it will melt.
How to use your homemade diaper rash cream:
With every diaper change, you will want to apply the diaper rash ointment to your baby’s bottom. Make sure you clean your baby’s bottom with unscented and chemical-free baby wipes so their bottom doesn’t get irritated from the chemicals in wipes. If you don’t have good wipes, you can use a cloth and warm water to clean the baby’s bum.
You only need to apply a small amount to cover the skin, a little bit goes a long way. Caking the cream on will not add any extra benefit, so this recipe lasts a while!
Tips to reduce diaper rash:
If you are using cloth diapers, you may have to switch to disposable diapers for a short time. Disposable diapers are most absorbent so they will draw moisture away from your baby’s skin.
Another thing that always works for my babies is using some type of baby powder like cornstarch or arrowroot powder. Just beware of conventional baby powders because they are filled with talc.
Exploring food intolerances is another consideration if your baby constantly has a diaper rash.
If your baby has severe diaper rash, consult your medical provider. This could be a more serious fungal or bacterial infection you’ll want to get taken care of.
