I have made just about every product we have ever needed in our home for cleaning from stain remover to my own laundry detergent.  It takes a lot of research and experimentation to get things just right, but this homemade laundry scent booster is the easiest thing I’ve ever made!

This laundry scent booster has four ingredients that are super easy to find and are all natural. You don’t have to worry about artificial fragrances or other toxic chemicals when it comes to this laundry scent booster.

If you walk down the laundry aisle at the store you will have an overwhelming amount of options to make your laundry smell better. In reality, we shouldn’t need these things if our detergent is doing the job, but sometimes you need an extra boost for things like athletic wear or cloth diapers.

You will also be overwhelmed by the scent walking down that aisle. Laundry detergent and laundry scent boosters are filled with synthetic fragrances and endocrine disruptors that are not good for sensitive skin or really for our health.

Why you’ll love this DIY laundry scent booster:

This DIY laundry scent booster uses ingredients that are helpful to our washing machine and our clothing. Store-bought scent boosters can create buildup in your washing machine, causing your clothes and machine to smell.

This homemade laundry scent booster is scented with essential oils, so you don’t have to worry about harmful chemicals from artificial fragrances. When you make your own laundry scent booster, you can have your own personal scent and control how strong you want it to smell.

It is important to make sure you are buying pure essential oils that are safe. Read my post here on the best essential oils for your family.

What is in this homemade laundry scent booster:

There are four simple ingredients in this booster

Kosher Salt aids in eliminating odors and softening fabrics. When the salt breaks down in the washing machine it helps to soften water and your clothing. If you have hard water, kosher salt is better to use than Epsom salt because Epsom salt can actually make your water harder.

Washing Soda aids as a water softener which helps your detergent better clean your clothing and helps lift dirt and grime off your clothing, making it easier for them to smell better.

Baking soda is a natural deodorizer. This will aid in your clothing smelling fresh and removing dirt and grime from your clothing

Essential Oils provide the scent-boosting action in this natural laundry scent booster. The best part of making your own laundry scent booster is you can control how much scent you have with these essential oils. You can add more or less to have a light scent or to have a stronger scent.

How to boost scent naturally in your laundry routine:

Add white vinegar to your wash

White vinegar is beneficial in your laundry routine because it helps neutralize odors. Simply put about 1/2 cup in your washing machine to help with odor!

It has been controversial whether or not to do this, but I have been doing this for years and have yet to have a problem with my washing machines.

Clean your washing machine regularly

Most people don’t think too much of cleaning their washing machines, but this is especially important if you have a front-loading washing machine! If you notice your washing machine smelling after a while, consider cleaning it and it will help with your clothing. I clean mine routinely once a month!

Wash small loads of laundry

It is easy to want to shove as much clothing as possible into the laundry, I know I’m guilty of it! However, this can impact how clean and fresh-smelling your clothes will get. If your washing machine if overfilled, it does not clean as effectively.

Use wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets

If you want to eliminate artificial fragrance, getting rid of dryer sheets is necessary. However, we all know they add extra scent and help keep our clothes from feeling static. Wool dryer balls are the perfect switch to these! You can add your favorite essential oils to your dryer balls and throw them in the dryer to add a fresh scent to your clothing.

Storing Your Homemade Scent Booster:

I store my homemade laundry scent booster in a glass jar, typically in a dry, dark, and cool place. You don’t want your stuff to dry out, so it is important to be sure it is in a good environment. You can also store it in an airtight container, glass is preferred!

Essential Oil Blends for You Laundry Scent Booster:

The best way to have a long-lasting scent is to mix the proper amount of essential oils. Did you know essential oils work best when you have a

If you have a front-loading washing machine, consult your owner’s manual to see which compartment your scent booster should go in as each one may be different!
