If you are new to essential oils you may not yet have figured out that buying an essential oil blend is typically more expensive than buying the separate oils to make the blend yourself. Don’t get me wrong, some blends are cheaper to buy because of a certain essential oil in the blend that is pricey. However, this particular blend of essential oils is super cost-effective and can be used for a variety of things!

What is Thieves?

Thieves is a blend of several essential oils that is trademarked by an essential oil company. However, the name was given to this blend because thieves during the bubonic plague in Europe would have the scents of certain herbs and spices on them that prevented them from contracting this plague when they went and robbed those who had died from the plague. Apparently, the judge was so impressed by this he even gave the robbers a more lenient sentence because they were able to help other people protect themselves from this plague. 

These herbs, plants, and spices ultimately led to the blend of oils we all know as the “Thieves” oil blend. Many essential oil companies have different names for this blend and it is used to clean, disinfect, and purify in many products. 

What are the Benefits of Thieves Oil?

Thieves oil is a powerful essential oil blend that is packed with many health properties. The oils that form this blend have anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and even wound-healing benefits.

 Some studies have shown that the oils can boost immunity, which makes this a great germ fighter blend and can help promote a healthy immune system. What Is DIY Thieves Oil Made From?

Thieves blend is made from the following essential oils:

Cinnamon oil:

Cinnamon oil has been shown to have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-oxidant properties. This makes it a great oil for disinfectant use!

Eucalyptus oil:

Eucalyptus oil is great for respiratory health but it also has antimicrobial properties which makes it great for disinfecting! 

Lemon oil:

Citrus oils have been shown to be great at fighting bacteria and viruses. Lemon oil has particularly been shown to have powerful anti-fungal properties. 

Clove oil:

Clove oil is another great antimicrobial oil that is great at killing off bacteria. It has also been shown to help with respiratory issues and helps relieve coughs! 

Rosemary oil

Rosemary has a lot of health benefits, among them is helping to get rid of bacteria.

Another essential oil I like to add to this blend is orange oil. While it is not technically in the trademarked thieves blend I like the added aroma and orange oil has good cleaning and anti-bacterial properties.

What Can I Use Thieves Oil In?

This oil blend can be used in a variety of things. I use mine to make my homemade thieves cleaner or in my homemade cleaning products such as my all-purpose cleaner. This blend is great to put in a diffuser during flu season or to make a room spray to purify the air. You can also add it to the soap in your soap dispenser to make a natural anti-bacterial soap. 

You can also make a roller bottle for topical use with this oil blend by adding it to a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil or olive oil. This is great for scabbed-over cuts, insect bites, scars, and even acne. 

How To Make Your Own DIY Thieves Oil Blend

​To make your own blend of thieves, combing the following essential oils:

• 50 drops of clove essential oil
• 30 drops cinnamon bark essential oil
• 20 drops of lemon essential oil
• 20 drops of orange essential oil
• 16 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
• 12 drops rosemary essential oil

This will fit into a 10ml bottle although you could double it and it would fill up your 10ml bottle fully. 

You want to make sure this is stored in a dark glass bottle away from direct sunlight. 

This blend can store up to two years as long as it is stored properly!

Conclusion:

Making your own thieves oil blend is very easy and cost-effective! As long as you have the oils, you can make multiple batches. This blend can be used to make an effective cleaning spray, or an air freshener, and is great to put in your all-purpose spray!
