The bathroom is one of the biggest spaces in our home that we definitely want cleaned. I mean, who likes using a dirty bathroom?
I kept my old toilet bowl cleaner around for a long time after switching to non-toxic cleaners because I thought “Well it doesn’t touch my skin, so I’m not too worried about it.” But, did you know that they let off toxic fumes that are not safe for us or our environment? These fumes are bad for our respiratory tract and can lead to asthma and other lung issues.
Harmful Chemicals in Commercial toilet bowl cleaners:
Store-bought cleaners are filled with harmful ingredients like chlorine bleach and other corrosive ingredients. A Bleach-based cleaner can be very harmful if ingested and emit toxic fumes into the air, especially if they sit for a good length of time.
I don’t know about you all, but I don’t want to worry about these products in my home with kids or pets around.
Bathroom toilet cleaners all emit toxic fumes that are not safe for any of us to breathe in. Why bring that into our homes when we can clean our toilets naturally with easy-to-source ingredients?
I tried doing things like making the popular fizzy toilet bombs but those never worked out for me. We also have hard water and can get mineral buildup and stubborn stains pretty fast if we don’t have a heavy-duty cleaner. After a little research and some testing, this natural toilet bowl cleaner will leave your toilet sparkling clean!
Why You Should Make Your Own Natural Toilet Bowl Cleaner?
Toilet bowl cleaner is relatively inexpensive in the store, and it is no different when you make it at home yourself. This is especially true if you are already trying to make some of your own non-toxic products like dish soap or diaper rash cream and keep these ingredients on hand!
Natural homemade toilet bowl cleaner is free of toxic chemicals that are harmful to our health and our environment. The toxic fumes that are emitted by toilet bowl cleaner are dangerous, especially for pets.
You can easily make a DIY powdered toilet bowl cleaner as well!
Ingredients in this DIY toilet bowl cleaner
Liquid Castile Soap Or Dish Soap
You can also choose to use liquid dish soap. This is preferable to me when I don’t have a surfactant on hand because adding something with a surfactant makes the product ten times better.
Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda):
Baking soda will help lift mineral stains and other stains from your toilet. It also helps naturally deodorize your toilet.
Citric Acid
Citric acid is a natural descaler and disinfectant. This means it can remove soap scum, hard water stains, calcium deposits, lime, or rust from your toilet. It also kills bacteria in and on your toilet seat.
Essential Oils:
Essential oils, especially citrus oils, have many antibacterial and antiviral properties that aid in cleaning and deodorizing. I personally use lemon essential oil when making this but you can also use other antibacterial essential oils, such as tea tree oil or a thieves blend.
Optional ingredient: A natural surfactant like coco-glucoside
When I discovered the power of natural surfactants, it changed the game when it came to making my own cleaning products. A surfactant is one of the active ingredients in most conventional cleaning products. However, the surfactants used are chemically derived and are not made from natural elements.
I use coco-glucoside in most of my homemade cleaning products, but you can also use decyl glucoside or caprylyl glycol. These surfactants provide powerful cleaning power and can easily remove stubborn stains like mineral and hard water stains. If you use dish soap in place of castile soap, you don’t need to add a surfactant.

Other tips and tricks to naturally clean toilets:
Use Powdered Toilet Bowl Cleaner IF you Don’t Have Time For Liquid
You can find my recipe here for powdered toilet bowl cleaner. I prefer to use powder because it requires less ingredients and it is super easy to whip up!
Don’t use a pumice stone:
I know you’ll find advice all over to use pumice stones in your toilet, but this actually can scratch up the inside of your toilet bowl and make it easier for mineral buildup and other stains to stick easily in the inside of your toilet bowl. Instead, I use something like the green scouring pads to scrub off really stubborn stains!
Clean Your Toilet Tank
You can put some citric acid in your toilet tank and that can remove any impurities that the water can be carrying into your toilet bowl!
How to use your DIY toilet cleaner:
The best way to use your DIY toilet cleaner is to spray it directly inside of the toilet bowl. You can either choose to let it sit or scrub it out right away. Take a scrub brush and thoroughly scrub the inside of your toilet. Simple and easy!
How to make our DIY natural toilet bowl cleaner:
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup citric acid
- 2 cups distilled water
- 1 cup castile soap or dish soap
- 30 drops of essential oil
Optional: 1/4 cup coco glucoside- omit if using dish soap
Step 1:
In a large bowl, Dissolve baking soda and citric acid in water
Step 2:
Gently mix in Soap Choice
Step 3:
Add in essential oils of choice. I like to use lemon oil, peppermint oil, or a mixture of these oils.
To store the natural toilet bowl cleaner:
There are a couple of ways you can store your DIY all-natural toilet bowl cleaner. You can store it in a squirt bottle, an amber glass jar, or in a spray bottle. I store mine in an amber glass jar because I always have tons of them on hand.
Make sure you are storing your homemade toilet cleaner away from lots of light so you don’t turn the essential oils rancid.
Final Thoughts:
Making your own natural toilet bowl cleaner is simple and easy. It is just as effective as store-bought chemical cleaners but is safe to have in the home and is better for our environment! If you want to switch to a more non-toxic or eco-friendly lifestyle, start with making your own homemade natural cleaners.
