Use this recipe for homemade diaper rash cream the next time you need it for your baby! This homemade diaper rash cream is packed with ingredients full of healing properties like Roman chamomile, shea butter, and bentonite clay! This recipe is free of toxic ingredients and is a great way to save money.

Homemade All-Natural Diaper Rash Cream

Homemade diaper rash cream is one of the easiest natural products you can make at home. It’s relatively inexpensive and takes minutes to make. This diaper rash cream is made with natural ingredients and works way better than commercial diaper creams.

I started making my diaper rash cream with my oldest baby because I didn’t like what was in conventional creams. Buying all of these clean brands for my baby was starting to get expensive.

I knew I could find organic ingredients and good quality ingredients online and make multiple batches for less money than store-bought creams. I did some research on the best ingredients that helped with diaper rash and combined them all into my diaper cream.

What is Diaper Rash?:

Diaper rashes, or diaper dermatitis, are red rashes that are typically in areas that come in contact with your baby’s diaper. They will usually occur in the groin area, buttocks, or inner thighs. Most diaper rash looks like red, inflamed skin, but also can have patches of raised skin or spots. Your baby’s delicate skin is very susceptible to diaper rash, especially if they are popping a lot or if they are teething. Prevention and treatment are key with diaper rash.

Common Causes of Diaper Rash:

  • Frequent contact with urine and fecal matter
  • Chafing From the diaper
  • Allergies
  • Yeast Infection or bacterial infection
  • Diarrhea
  • Medication Side Effects
  • Skin sensitivities

Why should I make homemade diaper rash cream?

Conventional diaper creams are full of endocrine and carcinogenic ingredients as you will see below. If you want to reduce the toxic load in your home and for your baby, you might find buying non-toxic diaper rash creams to be expensive. Homemade diaper rash cream is very cost-effective to make and uses basic ingredients. Even if I do buy non-toxic ones from the store, I like to keep the ingredients on hand in case I run out. It also makes for a great baby gift!

What is in conventional diaper rash creams?:

Petrolatum or Petroleum Jelly:

Petrolatum is the byproduct of petroleum. This ingredient is harmful because it can contain carcinogens and endocrine disruptors.

” When properly refined, petrolatum has no known health concerns. However, with an incomplete refining history, petrolatum could potentially be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAHs. PAHs are byproducts of organic material combustion, commonly stored in fats upon exposure due to their lipophilic properties.[3] There is no way to confirm proper refinement unless a complete refining history is provided.”

Basically, most companies do not have a complete refining history nor do they conduct most of these studies. It is best to avoid products with petrolatum to be on the safe side!

Lanolin:

Lanolin has been controversial. It is derived from oils that come from sheep’s wool. While the ingredient itself may be relatively safe, they spray the sheep’s wool directly with glyphosate and pesticides which get into the lanolin and go right onto our skin.

Fragrance:

Artificial fragrance not only causes skin irritation on a baby’s skin, but it is also a major endocrine disruptor. Fragrance is a term for over 3,000 different chemicals that companies do not have to disclose. Aside from us not knowing what we are even putting on our skin, fragrance can cause reproductive disorders, skin issues, and lung issues as well. This ingredient will most likely also irritate your baby’s skin even further.

Talc:

Talc is a known human carcinogen that is in many baby products that we use. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), talc can be contaminated with asbestos fibers which pose a high risk for cancer and, in some cases, respiratory disorders if it is in aerosol products

Ingredients In Homemade Diaper Rash Cream:

Non-Nano Zinc Oxide:

Zinc works as a skin protectant and provides a natural protective barrier to the skin. This is the main ingredient because it ensures that your baby’s skin will heal by protecting it from urine or fecal matter. Zinc oxide also has antiseptic and antifungal properties to help heal your baby’s diaper rash.

Bentonite Clay:

Bentonite Clay has many healing properties. It removes toxins from the body and absorbs oils and bacteria from the skin. This is the main healing ingredient in this homemade diaper rash cream. Bentonite clay also provides another protective layer to moisture for the skin.

Coconut Oil:

Coconut oil has many antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The use of coconut oil in this recipe is to promote wound healing and reduce inflammation. Coconut oil has also been shown to help with the production of collagen, which is essential for skin healing.

Cod Liver Oil (See Replacements below):

Cod liver oil is full of vitamins D and A. These vitamins help with skin healing and health. This is not essential to have, but it does aid in the healing process.

Organic Shea Butter (See Replacements Below):

Shea Butter adds conditioning and soothes the skin. Raw shea butter is different than whipped shea body butter. If you buy whipped shea butter, you are already getting shea butter mixed with oils that have been melted down. If you do get whipped shea butter, omit the coconut oil in this recipe.

Beeswax pellets:

Beeswax aids in healing and providing a moisture barrier to the skin.

Roman Chamomile or Tea Tree Essential Oils:

Tea Tree oil has many antimicrobial properties that can aid in removing bacteria and other substances from the skin. Roman Chamomile also has many of the same antibacterial properties and has been successful in helping to treat eczema and other issues. You could also use lavender essential oil. These are safe essential oils to use topically on babies as long as they are diluted and not applied directly to the skin.

Replacements for the diaper rash cream recipe:

  • If you don’t want to use Zinc because you are using cloth diapers, you can find my recipe {here} for a homemade diaper rash cream without zinc oxide.
  • For cod liver oil, you can replace it with many other healing oils. I have used vitamin E oil or castor oil. Cod liver, in my opinion, is the best option because of its vitamin properties. However, these other oils have healing vitamin properties as well
  • For the whipped Shea butter you can use mango butter or cocoa butter. They can be replaced in the same quantities and have the same soothing properties!
  • You can omit the beeswax if you don’t have any on hand. I have made this recipe without it multiple times.

Instructions:
  • In a saucepan or double boiler, melt beeswax pellets, shea butter, and coconut oil on very low heat.
  • Add two tablespoons of Zinc Oxide and 4 tablespoons of bentonite clay to a bowl. Add in melted oil mixture and cod liver oil. Using either a stand mixer or hand mixer, mix on medium speed until your mixture is nice and fluffy, it will look almost like a thick whipped cream.
  • Add in 20-30 drops of essential oil. I usually do Roman chamomile. However, tea tree or lavender will work great!
  • If you use whipped shea butter instead. You will do the same steps except you will only melt the beeswax and everything else can be added to the bowl to mix!

Store your homemade diaper rash cream in a glass jar, preferably a dark amber jar. Ensure you don’t keep it in a super warm place or it will melt. This cream can be kept for at least a year or more!

How to use your homemade diaper rash cream:

With every diaper change, you will want to apply the diaper rash cream to your baby’s bottom. Make sure you clean your baby’s bottom with unscented and chemical-free baby wipes so their bottom doesn’t get irritated from the chemicals in wipes. If you don’t have good wipes, you can use a cloth and warm water to clean the baby’s bum.

You only need to apply a small amount to cover the skin, a little bit goes a long way. Caking the cream on will not add any extra benefit, so this recipe lasts a while!

Tips to reduce diaper rash:

  • If you are using cloth diapers, you may have to switch to disposable diapers for a short time. Disposable diapers are most absorbent so they will draw moisture away from your baby’s skin.
  • Another thing that always works for my babies is using some type of baby powder like cornstarch or arrowroot powder. Just beware of conventional baby powders because they are filled with talc.
  • Exploring food intolerances is another consideration if your baby constantly has a diaper rash.
  • If your baby has severe diaper rash, consult your medical provider. This could be a more serious fungal or bacterial infection you’ll want to get taken care of.

The last thing we want as parents is to have our babies be uncomfortable. This natural diaper cream recipe will help keep your baby’s rash at bay and help quickly heal your baby’s rash. Making your own homemade products is a great way to not only save money but also control what ingredients are around your family!
